Through her advocacy work on gun violence prevention, Laura became involved with state and local politics and was approached to run for office herself.
Running as the Democratic candidate for the Nassau County Legislature in 2019 and 2021 was an immersive lesson in the political system. Laura raised money, canvassed for months, spoke at functions large and small, put out ads and mailers, and won the endorsement of all the local papers as well as many unions and social justice organizations.
She leveraged her experience as a writer, advocate, and candidate into her work as a Communications Director at the NY State Senate.
